In observation of 4/20, the world’s unofficial cannabis celebration, TIME has compiled a map and timeline of America’s evolving state laws regarding recreational and medical marijuana use. The interactive data visualizations pull data from the Marijuana Policy Project and the National Conference of State Legislatures to illustrate nearly 20 years of pot decriminalization—beginning with California’s decision to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.
