Closed Revives Its ’80s Denim Archives

Vintage cuts with uniquely positioned pockets and more make for unordinary jeans

Closed was originally founded by Marithé and François Girbaud (denim pioneers who have their own Urban Dictionary entry) in the ’70s. The French designer duo innovated techniques like stone-washing as well as the much more sustainable WATTWASH (treating and wearing denim with lasers instead of water), but more importantly, their cuts were born out of a desire to create an alternative to the ubiquitous five-pocket jeans. Though the Girbauds have moved on, their undertakings remain in the archives, and Closed’s latest campaign, “Born in the ’80s” revives some of the label’s key cuts from that decade, now with a contemporary twist.

The “Born in the ’80s” lookbook features Closed employees who are all—you got it—born in the ’80s. There are jackets, shirts, chinos and more, but it’s the jeans that we can’t stop looking at: the uniquely positioned pockets, the relaxed boyfriend fits, the Pedal Jump ’85’s pleats, the heavy Italian indigo denim, the classic high-waisted Pedal Pusher in its original stonewashed blue. The vintage styles balance carefreeness and simplicity with an ineffable edge.

Shop the collection online at Closed or in-person at one of their European stores. For NYCers, Closed is stocked at Brooklyn Denim Co and Curve.
