Inside the model room for Eero Saarinen’s reimagined 1962 TWA Flight Center
As hard as it may be to imagine that one of NYC’s most anticipated hotels will be opening at JFK Airport, of all places, new model room images only stir excitement over the forthcoming TWA Hotel. In the Eero Saarinen-designed TWA Flight Center, once a hub for the ’60s jet set class and now an official New York City landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building’s iconic arrival tubes will act as an entrance to the 512-room destination. Design firm Stonehill Taylor was tapped for the immersive, ’60s-inspired guest room interiors.
From Saarinen-designed midcentury modern Knoll furnishings to a lavish martini bar, eBay-sourced vintage rotary phones and terrazzo-tiled bathrooms, every detail of the hotel will hark back to the ethos of 1962, according to Tyler Morse, the CEO of MCR and MORSE Development. Guests can also expect extraordinary views of aircraft preparing for takeoff through floor-to-ceiling, soundproofed windows. The hotel will not open until spring 2019 but so many important touches are already in the works, including a fleet of vintage cars that will wait in the wings to transport guests to their terminals.
